I don't know about the %, but I feel that's a major part early on. In any situation, whether leading a congregation or establishing a business, people need to know you're credible before they'll follow you.
I don't know that it's solely an age issue, though.
I think you answered your own question this morning. You have built credibility through example. I don't think your age is an issue with the church any more if it ever was. Your example and your proven knowledge has earned you credibility.
